Adrian Roberts (KES 79-83) is Legal Director, International Trade at UK’s Department for Business and Trade. He recently visited KES for a lunch conversation with the KES Pride Society, and then gave a talk on his fascinating and varied career.
In his talk, Adrian covered some of the issues his department deals with that our pupils are aware of. He also talked about his prior role as part of the UK’s climate negotiation teams, his experience of the negotiations around exiting the European Union, and more recent international trade deals struck by the UK.
Reflecting on the careers advice he was given himself at KES, he gave some helpful advice to pupils, especially around the value of learning languages and spending time in Court. He talked about his own personal motivation to make a positive difference through his work, which means that his role as a Government Lawyer suits him very well. Our pupils asked lots of great questions around EDI issues, progress on tackling climate change, tariff policy and UK/EU negotiations during Brexit. It was a stimulating lunch visit all round!
