Christopher Lanham Ellis (KES 40-45)

Christopher Ellis (KES 40-45) died in September 2024 aged 95.  He was born in Berkshire but grew up in Southampton with his brother, Peter, and parents, Harry and Elise. He was evacuated from KES to Poole Grammar during WWII where, along with his brother, he lived with eight different families.  The war influenced much of the way he lived his life. Both during the war and throughout lockdown, Christopher used art as his “therapy.” On his 90th birthday, a surprise exhibition dedicated to his works was held at Winchester Art College.  In 1957, Christopher married the late Stella after he followed her to London after a whirlwind romance. They were married for 54 years until she died in 2011. Christopher was a builder by trade as, when the war finished when he was just 16. His only real choice was to join the construction industry as everything needed rebuilding.  He would, however, have preferred to train as a doctor and is fondly remembered for his 20-year service volunteering at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, where he would clean patients' hearing aids and organise appointment letters. At one point, he was the oldest volunteer at the hospital.  A memorial chair has been placed in a new dedicated reading area at The Arc, Library at the Hospital.
