Zofia Rogers is a prime time radio presenter at Capital Dance Radio.  Aged only 26, she has become incredibly successful within the industry in the short space of time since she left KES.  We caught up with Zofia to find out just what she has been up to.

“After leaving Sixth Form, I went to University of Birmingham and studied English Language as it was my favourite subject at A Level. I had always loved music but I hadn’t even considered becoming a DJ or Presenter until then. I got very involved in the dance music scene in Birmingham and also joined the student radio. My second year coincided with lockdown and so, when it hit, I bought DJ decks and taught myself.  It was only really then that I decided that it was something I wanted to pursue as a career.

After graduating, I moved to London and was DJing in the club circuit around London, including a regular spot at Ministry of Sound. I was also networking in the radio industry and trying to find opportunities to present at national radio stations. Then, just a year after graduating, I was offered two shows a week on Capital Dance. As I had no experience in radio at the time, these were night shifts so, for a year, I worked the 1-5 am slot. In 2023, this changed and I took over the weekday evening show, which I am still doing now. During this time, I was also learning to make music, so that now I also produce and release my own music.

My job means that each week is completely different.  However, most weeks I spend one or two days in music studios making music with other artists, singers and producers and then, every weekday evening, I have a radio show on Capital Dance. I also spend time making content for my social media pages and occasionally working with brands on collaborations. Weekends, especially in summer, are spent travelling to different cities to DJ.  This year I’ve already been to Bournemouth, Manchester, Hull, Leicester, Nottingham and other cities. And I have a very busy summer ahead as I’ll be heading to DJ in Ibiza as well as doing my UK shows.

I feel really lucky to be doing a job I love. Being offered the radio show on Capital Dance back in 2022 felt huge, especially as I had only left uni less than 12 months beforehand and DJing in Ibiza for the first time last summer was a standout moment for me. As the home of dance music, I’ve travelled to the island every summer and fallen in love with music more and more every time I go. Currently though, my focus is on making music, collaborating with new artists and releasing music on different record labels. My long term goals are just to continue building and DJing in bigger venues and travelling as much with work as I can.  Seeing the world while doing what I love is the goal!”

Sofia recently came back to KES to speak to pupils about working within the music industry.  We asked her how it felt to be back.

“It was amazing coming back to KES.  My younger brother starts in Year 7 in September so I still feel very connected to the School. I loved sharing about my career with current KES pupils as I really had no idea, when I was doing my A Levels, that I’d end up working in music!

I have really fond memories of KES, my friends and my teachers.  I absolutely loved doing Summer Camp in Sixth Form too. Fundraising for the trip and taking a group of young carers away during the summer was definitely the highlight of my time at school. I made amazing memories on that trip and the stories of the kids we met have stuck with me to this day.”
